There is a lot of talk on the Internet about buying a pet from a responsible breeder, in this case a responsible RagaMuffin breeder. So what IS a responsible breeder?
A responsible breeder chooses cats that are excellent representatives of the breed. Lots of pretty RagaMuffins exist, but most are not breeding material. A good breeder bases breeding cats on stellar pedigrees, proper temperament, health, and adherence to the written breed standard.
A responsible breeder does health clearances on EVERY cat in the breeding colony. DNA screening for multiple diseases is easy these days. All RagaMuffin cats should also have an echocardiogram prior to breeding. DNA testing alone is not enough. Preferably, all cats should have repeat echos every two years to ensure heart health.
The environment for the cats must also be suitable. Management of males and females is vital to prevent accidental breedings. RagaMuffins should have plenty of stimulation through play, windows, cat trees and, of course, lots of attention.
All cats in the house should be up to date on health care, including vaccinations, dental care and parasite control. Breeding cats should be groomed regularly, display clean, mat free coats and have trimmed nails.
Good quality breeders will ensure the future of the breed by utilizing a coefficient of inbreeding on each breeding. Genetic diversity is vital to maintain a healthy population. Since the RagaMuffin is a rare breed, working with other breeders and the careful utilization of an approved outcross may be necessary.
A responsible breeder should also participate in showing their RagaMuffins to get trained judges opinions on breeding cats. Yes, it can be expensive and it can be tough. Competition teaches breeders a lot about finer details to look for. It is also a great way to evaluate temperament. Cats that can be handled by strangers in a noisy high stress environment are the cream of the crop. IMO, not nearly enough RagaMuffin breeders get their cats out to be evaluated.
A quality breeder is available for buyers anytime during the cat’s lifetime. Creating a life means caring about that life from start to end. A RagaMuffin cat that must be rehomed due to owner’s illness, death, or any other reason, should be welcomed back to the original breeder.
Over time I have written numerous blogs about breeder responsibilities. Here are links:
